Brief Overview

Mount Elbrus isn’t technically a mountain — it is an inactive volcano located in the western Caucasus mountain range, near the Georgian border in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay–Cherkessia, Russia. With an elevation of 18,510 feet (5,642 meters), it is part of the Caucasus Range that straddles Asia and Europe, although most geographers place it in Europe. This makes it the tallest mountain in Europe and one of the Seven Summits, the highest mountains in each of the continents and elite climbers aspire to summit all of them.

Mount Elbrus’ prominence —a measure of how distinct a mountain is from nearby peaks — is 15,554 feet (4,741 m), making it the 10th most prominent mountain in the world. The east summit is slightly lower at 18,442 feet (5,621 m). Elbrus is a major center for mountaineering and tourism in the Caucasus region. In 1964 an extensive tourist and mountaineering base was opened, with large-scale sporting facilities.

Expedition Itinerary

Elbrus is located in Russia near the border of Georgia. We will take the southern route, this is the most common route and it offers more facilities such as mountain hut accommodation.

The standard route to the top of Elbrus is long and tiring but is technically easy. Ascent to the top needs basic mountaineering skills only. However, volatile weather conditions makes this ascent a more daring trip. There are several other routes as well to the top, it is often said that the northern route to the top lets you view the exquisite sceneries of icy glaciers and green fields on the way to the top, though the south route is the normal route.

The higher altitude is widely covered with snow sheets. There are 22 glaciers around Mount Elbrus. There you should spend at least five nights above the base camp to acclimatize for a long summit trek day of nearly 1600m.We will ensure that you will gain a lot of climbing skills and acclimatize fully before the actual summit day. The descent of Elbrus takes about 3-6 hours and needs lots of care while descending. We will ensure local guides for this expedition.
