Brief Overview

Ladakh is the home to numerous natural wonders, but the most precious gift bestowed upon this magical land is the Chadar Trek. The trek is all about persistence & survival – of learning to survive in the harsh terrains at sub-zero temperatures, interacting with the locals & understanding their way of living, especially in one of the most inhabitable regions in the world, while you trek across a dramatic gorge with frozen waterfalls on the frozen trail of Zanskar spanned out like a “Chadar” it acts as a mirror for the sky!

The primal thrill of sleeping in caves, musing over blazing bonfires in freezing temperatures with all the ever-present sense of danger, yet surviving it all – makes it the “Do before you die” journey!

Trek Itinerary

It is a 6-day trek in inhospitable conditions. It is a trek over a frozen river in Ladakh. The average mean temperature during the day is minus 10. At night, temperatures fall to minus 20 and 25. Ice forms break and change color on the river every few hours. At places, the Chadar (or ice) does not form over the river. Trekkers then have to forge a new trail climbing over snow-covered embankments to descend to a spot on the river where the ice is more stable. The truth is the extreme conditions are not hard to beat. With multiple layers and sensible trekking, the Chadar trek is not very difficult. But what sets it apart is its unique experience. Everything about it is unique: the scenery, temperature, atmosphere, the frozen river, sleds, unusual campsites, caves, and the ever-changing Chadar. So unique that it has to be experienced. In our Indiahikes list of treks, the Chadar, by far, is the most unique trek.

The best thing about this trek is that it goes on a flat altitude and there are no hard ascents or descents throughout the trek.

You will be awestruck with the high mountains surrounded all around.

On arrival, we will start our trek towards our campsite, Tsomo Paldar.

The layer of Chadar may seem thin here, you can also see various rock formations.

As you start heading to the next campsite which is Tibb Cave, this trek route has some of the most eye-catching frozen waterfalls that you’ll see.

You will probably have to squint your eyes to get some proper sunlight but you still may be unavailable because of the stiff cliffs creating an obstruction.

When you reach Dib from a distance you will be able to see a large cave and a sense of relief will run through your veins because that will be your halt for the night.

Today’s trek will take about 6 hours.

With a glass of butter tea in one hand and various conversations on the other, you will pass your time at the campsite.

Enjoy an overnight stay at the campsite.

Included :   BREAKFAST
DAY 6   Tibb to Nerak Frozen Waterfall

Today we will take a trek to the most scenic part of the region.

Later we proceed towards Nerak Village where we will get a chance to mingle with the local people and understand their way of living.

Nerak will be the coldest of all the campsites on the trek where the temperature goes down to as low as -30 degrees during the night. It will be important that you wear proper clothing and layers to stay safe from the biting cold.

In the village, you will get to witness the old constructions of India like ancient bridges and constructions.

Today’s hike will take almost 7 hours.

Your stay will be planned at a comfortable village camp.

Included :   BREAKFAST

On the way back, admire the beauty of the region and you can also spend your time wearing traditional woolen gonchans (robes).

If you are lucky enough you will find local people singing the famous Ladhaki songs which will force you to throw out some of your best dance moves.

Upon arrival at Tibb Cave, spend your time relaxing at the campsite. Get in your sleeping bags for a peaceful sleep.
